Shadow Studies
Table for DECCA
Designed for DECCA (Internationally renowned manufacturer and retailer of high-end wood furniture), the expandable table's pattern and form is inspired by natural tree-rings. Operable elements are not hidden, but intentionally articulated to express the beauty of the expandable table’s function. A unique overlapping concentric stacked-ringed “trunk” system is employed to compliment natural form/thickness of the table’s top and pattern, producing an elegant and clear language for the table as a whole. The dynamic stepped surfaces create beautiful shadow effects under different lighting conditions.
Stacked rings of varying diameters make up the “trunk” of the table, producing a very stable and balanced structure. The "rings-system" also aids in simplifying the manufacturing process. Due to the varying sizes of the rings, it maximizes usage of raw wood panels to the fullest, wastage is minimized. By employing this system of rings, simply by changing the materials of the rings, it allows for a whole family of designs (see below).
